The Work of Providence for the Saints

First, I shall undertake the proof and defense of the great truth that the affairs of the saints in this world are certainly conducted by the wisdom and care of special Providence. And in doing so I address myself with cheerfulness to perform, as I am able, a service for that Providence which has throughout my life ‘performed all things for me,’ as the text speaks.

There is a twofold consideration of Providence, according to its twofold object and manner of dispensation; the one in general, exercised about all creatures, rational and irrational, animate and inanimate; the other special and peculiar. Christ has a universal empire over all things (Eph. 1. 22); He is the head of the whole world by way of dominion, but a head to the Church by way of union and special influence (John 17. 2). He is ‘the Saviour of all men, especially of those that believe’ (1 Tim. 4. 10). The Church is His special care and charge. He rules the world for its good, as a head consulting the welfare of the body.
This article, the first chapter from Flavel's much longer and fuller treatise, will surely warm the hearts of any and all of God's true children who know Christ is not only their Lord but also the King of the entire universe. We are not helpless victims of chance or an unpredictable 'Mother Nature' but rather we are guided, guarded and graced by the power and love of a merciful God by whom 'all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.' (Rom 8:28)

And, to those who are estranged from God, yet being guided by their own ignorance and darkness of heart or who profess the true religion but who have never experienced the grace of God in their life, what Flavel writes will hopefully cause you to think deeply about all that befalls the true saints of God. For without question, the whole world is but a servant to the Almighty God to be used to benefit His precious Church which He purchased with His own blood and shall glorify in the last day. It is therefore most expedient that one leave this world behind and join with the people of God, the entrance of which is through that divine and only appointed "door"; the Lord Christ, the great Shepherd of the Sheep.

This is a most commendable read, therefore to all. It doesn't get much better than John Flavel. grin
