The advances of various creationist groups and of the intelligent design movement indicate that Christians are still considerably interested in the creation-versus-evolution controversy. Yet we would be mistaken to think that the advance is on the creationist side only. Renowned professor of OT Dr. Bruce Waltke recently made headlines with his remarks that evolution is entirely compatible with Christianity—indeed, with conservative evangelical, even inerrantist Christianity. Waltke warns further that if Christians do not concede the point they will be relegated to the academic ghetto and find that society at large will never take them seriously.1 Clearly, there are no signs that interest in the topic will soon fade.
To start off the new year I thought it would be interesting to provide a topic that has been tossed around and debated for decades concerning the views of the renowned conservative, Reformed theologian and professor, Benjamin Breckinridge Warfield of old Princeton. It has been alleged that B.B. Warfield, as conservative a biblical scholar that he was, embraced the theory of evolution and rejected the doctrine of creation; an 'ex nihilo' (out of nothing) creation in which God created the world and all its inhabitants in the space of six twenty-four hour days and rested from that creation work on the seventh day.

If some think that this is nothing more than an old dusty subject, that would certainly be an unfortunate error. For even recently, a once recognized conservative Reformed scholar by the name of Dr. Bruce Waltke has openly embraced the theory of evolution and unashamedly rejected the Christian, biblical doctrine of creation. Given that those who embrace evolution, to one degree or another or who have opted to go over to the less 'offensive' premise of "Intelligent Design" sometimes defend their view(s) by referring to Warfield as one who has set the precedence for credibility of their non-biblical stance. So, the question should be asked, and that is exactly what Fred Zaspel does in this article, Did B.B. Warfield indeed embrace and teach that evolution was true and it should be accepted by the Christian Church?

Enjoy this evidentiary excursion through the writings of B.B. Warfield and the truth revealed in them. BigThumbUp
