Are all sins created equal?

The common proverb in the evangelical community is that no one sin is greater than any other, since all sins lead to hell and committing any one sin is to break the whole Law. Evangelicals often say that distinguishing between sins is a human convention, and not from God.

But the varying punishments God assigns to different sins in the Law would seem to indicate otherwise. Do some people suffer worse punishment in hell than others for their sins?

Can anyone clarify the issue for me?
