I have been on sites that are King James only, it is to them the only bible that has GOD's correct wording, all other bibles are in error. Does anyone on this site hold this view?

I certainly hope not!

The KJV was a fine translation when it was published 400 years ago, but there are several problems with it today:-

1. The language has changed. What does 'leasing' mean in Psalm 5:6? 'Let(teth)' in 2Thes 2:7 means exactly the opposite of what it means today. In England today, a 'striker' (Titus 1:7) is a goal-scoring soccer player!

2. Occasionally the KJV mixes up the Perfect Tense with the Aorist. Compare Rom 6:2 KJV with the NKJV.

3. Sometimes the translation is just plain wrong. Titus 2:13 and 2Peter 1:1 are clear references to the Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ which the KJV misses. Again, compare KJV with NKJV.

I don't have any problem with people who know and love the KJV and prefer to use it. It only becomes a problem when some of them try to force its use on everyone else.

I use to hold it for about 10 years or so, but the presence of historical, factual, and logical inconsistencies within Onlyism caused me to re-evaluate my convictions. During worship, my church uses this exclusively. Not because we are "onlyists", but for uniformity. However, we are also encouraged to use a variety for personal studies. I personally prefer something a bit more modern in its English. I could simply never recomend any translation from an "onlyist" position.

Hello Neicey
I personally use the NKJV while my church use the NIV at services. Just recently bought a CEV for my youngest daughter who loves it and reads it fervently because she can understand it, I do not know how accurate it is but if it gets her excited about the Lord I believe it would be foolish to undermine her. Moving to the NKJV was a big step for me.

Does anyone know if the New International Version is fine to use for study or listening, I have this version on cassette.

I for one cannot recommend the NIV for several reasons. But the most salient reason is that the method of translation used was a "Dynamic Equivalence" which resulted in more of a biased interpretation rather than an accurate translation. The publisher's goal, of course, is to make money and this it did by marketing this unacceptable "version" of the Bible as being "readable", etc. Just because a document is more readable than another doesn't necessarily mean that the document is accurate, truthful or even genuine. To put it another way, the NIV doesn't accurately interpret the inspired text and is full of errors, both major and minor.

You would be far better off reading/listening to the NKJV or the NASB.

The KJV only thing has made me curious lately too and bothered me too. Here's a good site by James White, a reformed apologist, who seems to have taken this issue head on too. He even has a book about the whole matter. It's worth looking at http://aomin.org/kjvo.html.

I have been a Christian for 20 years and have mostly used NIV. God must work through it - I can testify to that. But it is interesting about the dynamic equivalence issue that Pilgrim brings up. I didn't even know about this whole thing until lately. I do think one must be careful about certain translations. For example "The Message" by Eugene Peterson is for some reason popular today. But it doesn't take too long to see there are some major problems with it. And this is the lowest on the totem pole for dynamic equivalence/thought-for-thought I beleive (along with other paraphrases).

Like Pilgrim I see a lot of problems with the NIV as well as other dynamic equivalent translations.
However, you are correct God can use them. In fact my very first Bible was a Good News Bible, because that is what I was given.
Later when I became aware that the Good News Bible had its limitations, I asked people who I respected which translation was the closest to the original languages.
Unfortunately their answer was the NIV and I used it for a number of years, until I found out about the method of translation it used. Needless to say I was very disappointed and went out and got myself a NASB and still later a KJV. I am kind of partial to the KJV, but I am far from being a KJV only advocate. I now own a KJV, a NASB & a NKJV.

I also found out that when you tell some people about dynamic equivalent translations, they get very defensive. This is even when you tell some Christians of Reformed persuasion. I have found it to be one of the many conversation closures.
This is one reason why when I talk to people about this matter, I tend to just give information without making a big deal about it.

As much as I am leery of the NIV, I am even more disgusted with the Message. In many places, it either trivializes the text or gives it completely different meaning.

And the man who wrote it (Eugene Peterson) even claims to be Reformed!

Also, it has been a while but perhaps you might have an example of mistranslating in the NIV.
