Throughout the history of the Church most theological discussions have stressed Christ’s passive obedience (although not often calling it by that name), but have had very little to say about His active obedience. The result is that many professing Christians who readily acknowledge that Christ suffered and died for them seem altogether unaware of the fact that the holy, sinless life which He lived was also a vicarious work in their behalf, wrought out by Him in His representative capacity and securing for them title to eternal life.
This month's "Article of the Month" is by the well-known author Loraine Boettner. In this article, he discusses the importance of the Active obedience (life) of Christ in the salvation of believers in distinction to the equally important Passive obedience (death) of Christ. That perfect obedience which Christ lived throughout His life was equally vicarious and substitutionary, i.e., it was done in behalf of all those whom God determined to save in Him. It is that righteous and holy obedience to the entire law of God which is imputed to the sinner at the moment he/she believes upon Christ, aka: justification. And that declaration of "justified" secures the salvation of the believer for all eternity. For it is Christ's passive obedience which paid the debt owed and the active obedience which supplies the perfect conformity to the law required for eternal life. Don't pass this one by... the subject has too often been ignored in recent times and it is the focus of attack by several modern heresies, e.g., NPP (New Perspective on Paul) and FV (Federal Vision), et al. As always, we encourage you to discuss these monthly articles in the Discussion Board. In His service and grace,
simul iustus et peccator
