Lynda, I believe that it was because the canon of Scripture and the apostolic age was coming to an end. The miracles that were done (in particular areas in a condensed period of time) were confirming the apostolic ministry and the dawning of the New Covenant era. He also told Timothy to take some wine for his stomach (1 Tim. 5:23).

I spent 20 years in the movement and experienced a lot of the things you have inquired about. I sang in Kathryn Khulman's choir once when I was a kid, saw many instances of what were called "miraculous healings" (none of which could be documented) and "signs and wonders" that left so much room for doubt that they could only be interpreted as significant or wondrous by people who had already convinced themselves to believe it, or those who desperately wanted to believe it.

I spoke in "tongues." I "prophesied." I had a powerful, "anointed" teaching and music "ministry" that could move people to laughter or tears as I wished.
