I have a friend who in many way seems to be a solid Christian. Yet at times he says some strange things that leave me wondering what to say. I just got an e-mail from him that is a great example of this. For example: I am a big supporter of the Thrown (referring to the thrown currently held by Queen Elizabeth) as I believe it is the continued thrown of King David. From King David to this day. I am not very knowledgable of this kind of thing, but the first thing that jumped into my mind is British Israelism. How do you think I should respond to this? Tom

1. Don't reply 2. IF you are interesting in pursuing the matter, ask him HOW from Scripture did he arrive at that view. I've never heard of this view nor anything even remotely similar. Of course, I don't get out much so I'm sure there are an infinite variety of bizarre beliefs out there.

Just thought I would let you know I asked my friend for scriptural evidence on this matter. Here is his reply: The secret is in Edinburgh Castle. Thats why I went there....Jacob's Stone. It actually starts with Jacob's blessing of Judah and Judah's twin sons Zara and Phraz. I have done a probably 10 hour power point on this. By the way, he told me that I have his permission to share any information like this to others. Tom

Ah yes, "the SECRET" is in Edinburgh Castle. And you consider this 'friend' of yours "to be a solid Christian"? And, if you read John Pratt's article to which you provided a link, it should be more than obvious that this man is a false teacher. He quotes from Psalms 89:3-4, 20-37 which is indisputably a reference to Christ ( David) and those whom He will redeem and consequently be adopted as sons ( seed). It is God's promise of salvation to the Lord Christ and His true followers. To believe that this is referring to some earthly lineage of pagans which culminates with the British monarchy is almost comical. Peter prophesied about such people when he wrote: 2 Peter 3:14-18 (ASV) Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for these things, give diligence that ye may be found in peace, without spot and blameless in his sight. And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote unto you; as also in all [his] epistles, speaking in them of these things; wherein are some things hard to be understood, which the ignorant and unstedfast wrest, as [they do] also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. Ye therefore, beloved, knowing [these things] beforehand, beware lest, being carried away with the error of the wicked, ye fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him [be] the glory both now and for ever. Amen.

I've never heard of this view nor anything even remotely similar. Of course, I don't get out much so I'm sure there are an infinite variety of bizarre beliefs out there. British Israelism was a teaching of (among many others) the Worldwide Church of God (Armstrong), who had individual countries as being the descendants of specific sons of Jacob (including Britain [and its colonies, Australia, Canada] and U.S. from Ephraim and Manasseh, though I don't remember which he had as being which.) The wikipedia article is quite interesting.

There is no such thing as preaching Christ and Him crucified, unless we preach what nowadays is called Calvinism. It is a nickname to call it Calvinism; Calvinism is the gospel, and nothing else. - C.H. Spurgeon

Pilgrim Just to let you know, there are times my friend seems quite sound; then other times such as this topic, he leaves me scratching my head. I need to be a little tactful with him, because he is also a work collegue. Him and I have had some very good conversations and I have even shared some articles written by people like RC Sproul and Dr. Steven Lawson with him. To which he seemed to enjoy a lot. Unfortunately because of time restraints although I have been trying to use the time I have to study this issue; it has not been enough to make anything more than dent of the topic. Yes, the article I found on Google; it was fairly obvious the author used a few Scripture verses out of context. Not sure at this point if my friend would agree with the author of the article.
What you wrote is helpful.

You are correct that British Israelism is a teaching of the Worldwide Church of God and Mormonism. Yet, there are groups out there that claim they follow the teaching of the Reformation; especially where soteriology is concerned. It does appear however (and I haven't read a lot on it yet) that they are Dispensational. One author in responding to an accusation of being guilty by association (referring to the World Wide Church of God and Mormonism) was adamant they were Protestant. Of course claiming to believe Reformation doctrine and actually believing it, doesn't mean they actually do.
