I want to ask a question related to John Newton’a hymn Amazing Grace.
I was on a Reformed board and for the first time I can remember; people were questioning whether or not we should be singing ‘Amazing Grace”. I can understand people who are exclusive psalmist, but..
According to them, the hymn does not name Jesus and therefore it is questionable.
When I said that I think it is very obvious the grace that the hymn talked about was came from God.
They seemed to think it is not obvious at all,
What got me about that conversation, it was coming from people who I thought would be in favour of the hymn.
I believe John Newton believed in the doctrines of grace and the hymn reflected that.
Am I missing something?

Tom

nope you aren't missing a thing. Evidently, the detractors are missing something, or perhaps are adding some cockamamie modern hermeneutic through which they filter everything, etc., Christocentricity. I guess they would have to reject 99% of the Old Testament too because the name of "Jesus" rarely appears albeit there are allusions to Him and His coming at some future time. The question they should be asking is... does the hymn conform to biblical teaching and/or a genuine experience of the saints?

Does it glorify God? Indeed yes, so good to sing.
