I have a question that was posed to me and I thought because it mentions John Calvin and I am not an expert on John Calvin, I donít want to answer for him; which would be speculation on my part. I thought the Highway would be a good place to answer the following.
[quote]How would you answer?

Me: How do you square Romans 9 with the fact that God is not the author of sin?

Calvinist: God is the first cause, not the direct cause. Man is the direct cause.

Me: Why then does God hold us to a higher standard than Himself in Romans 14?

Calvinist: ???

ďJohn Calvin struggled to defend his argument because it is inherently contradictory. Did you notice that he flatly denied the charge that God is the author of sin only to later affirm it? Even on a philosophical basis, Calvin was unable to truly support his own argument. The argument of second causes simply fails both philosophically and Scripturally.Ē

A true Calvinist (which does NOT mean a "sheep" who elevates the man John Calvin on a pedestal of infallibility), understands the two salient biblical axioms: 1) God is absolutely sovereign in both power and authority, i.e., ALL THINGS have been eternally ordained by God and by His providence He brings what He has ordained to pass in time. 2) Man and man alone is wholly responsible for his every thought, word and deed.

See the following for a historical/biblical defense against the charge that Calvinism, de facto, is the "author of sin" when someone holds to the two above biblical truths.

- 3. THAT IT MAKES GOD THE AUTHOR OF SIN (Objections to the doctrine of Predestination)

- Calvin on The Eternal Predestination of God Section VII

- Calvin on A Defense of the Secret Providence of God, Section III

John Calvin himself was charged and abraded for his doctrines which his semi-Pelagian counterparts found odious to their God-hating, man-centered theology. Throughout his years he answered his detractors thoroughly and decisively in various documents of which the two references above show clearly. Your questioner should consider the epitome of how God's sovereignty and man's responsibility are compatible in Scripture's description of Christ's crucifixion:

Acts 2:22-24 (ASV) 22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God unto you by mighty works and wonders and signs which God did by him in the midst of you, even as ye yourselves know; 23 him, being delivered up by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye by the hand of lawless men did crucify and slay: 24 whom God raised up, having loosed the pangs of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

Acts 3:18 (ASV) 18 But the things which God foreshowed by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ should suffer, he thus fulfilled.

Acts 4:26-28 (ASV) 26 The kings of the earth set themselves in array, And the rulers were gathered together, Against the Lord, and against his Anointed: 27 for of a truth in this city against thy holy Servant Jesus, whom thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, were gathered together, 28 to do whatsoever thy hand and thy council foreordained to come to pass.

Acts 13:26-27 (ASV) 26 Brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and those among you that fear God, to us is the word of this salvation sent forth. 27 For they that dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath, fulfilled [them] by condemning [him].
