"Peace" was a common Hebrew salutation used in greeting and farewell. Jesus gives it new meaning. Jesus' peace is true reconciliation with God, purchased with His death.
There must first be peace with God through the sacrifice of Christ then inward peace can follow and then there can be peace between men which is part of the purpose for which Christ died. The Christian must be active to promote it so harmony can exist in the church. Peace comes as a result of God's gift and is a legacy Jesus left to His heirs.

When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of Glory died, my richest gain I count but loss and pour contempt on all my pride. - Isaac Watts
