Dear Sister,

I would be open to you providing daily devotionals from Philpot with this one request. Mr. Philpot is well known to be in the Pietist camp where the tendency is too often to dwell on sin to the exclusion of the great joy which believers have in Christ. Both are the work of the Spirit within and it is sometimes easy to err by veering off this road of truth to one side or the other. Thus, I would very much appreciate you reading through the devotionals you wish to graciously post here and supply a biblical balance from them.

The danger is to be caught up in morbid introspection looking for the depth of sin which yet remains in us without looking to Christ who by His great sacrifice has delivered all believers from the penalty, presence and power of sin. On the other hand, it is unfortunately the opposite emphasis today where the seriousness of sin is diminished or even completely denied and joy is the focus. But again, one cannot have Spirit-wrought joy unless one realizes the reason for it; God's loving sacrifice in sending forth His only-begotten Son to bear the penalty for the sin of His own and to clothe them in His perfect righteousness, by grace through faith.

I think we all need to truly appreciate the truth and wisdom found in Luther's Reformation phrase:

simul iustus et peccator
"At the same time justified and sinner"

We glory in the grace of God in Christ Jesus and His lovingkindness shown to us who have been given eternal life in Him... as we continue to war against the sin which remains in us and strive after holiness. For in doing so we know our Father is most pleased with us as He Himself by the Spirit works in us those good works which we were destined and created to do.

In His marvelous grace,
