I realize there are ways to get around it, but how do we handle this straight up.

"But false prophets also rose among the people, jast as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. (2 Peter 2:1 NASB) <highlighted the phrase in question>

I think it would be less a problem for Limited Atonement than for Perseverance.

Hi John_C,

This is one of the verses used by the Calvinistic univeralists, but by Calvinists can be easily handled by the correct interpretation of the Greek word for "bought" (agorazo). The word is not meant to be interpreted as salvific "bought" but as "to acquire, to constitute, or to establish"". I urge you to read the article Redemption In 11 Peter 2:1, by Dr. Gary Long, in the Atonement section of Highway articles, which gives a thorough explanation of the verse.

Basically, the Calvinist view interprets the verse to mean "There shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who created them and bring upon themselves swift destruction."

In His Hands,

Ruth

Gill makes an observation to consider

and bring upon themselves swift destruction; either in this life, being suddenly cut off in the midst of their days, and by the immediate hand of God, as Arius and other heretics have been; or eternal damnation in the other, which their tenets lead unto, and which will swiftly come upon them when they are promising themselves peace and safety.

This is an important point.. swift destruction is not necessarily damnation, it may be a physical destruction .

Yes unless we assert the consequent, this, as well as many other verses, denies the point of Limited Atonement.
And this is one of the many reasons why most who say they are Calvinists actually mean they are 4 point Calvinists.

Grace is not common.

So Gill says that this verse DOES speak of 'bought' in a salvific sense, but the 'sudden destruction' is temporal and not spiritual ?

Actually a true Calvinist( you really cant be any less than a 5 point Calvinist and really be a Calvinist)knows that the 5 points of Calvinism go together as one.

Total Depravity = Man is totally depraved and God must pull him from his pit and he has nothing to do with it.

Unconditional Election = God chose ( before the foundation of the world) a people to be his own they are called the elect .

Limited Atonement = God did not die for everyone but only died for the elect . Many say that is cruel but we can now go back to total depravity . We all deserved Hell but the Lord graciously has pulled us from are pit ( we who are saved). And the Bible tells us " he will have mercy on who is has mercy on whom he has mercy...."

Irresisteble Grace = If the Lord has predestined you for Heaven you cannot deny his effectual call to you.

Perserverance of the Saints = If you are truely saved you cannot lose your salvation.

They all go together. Also I encourage you who dont agree with Calvinism to read the book A Journey in Grace.

Was Pharoah's soul not also "bought" by God who served him up as a vessel of wrath prepared for destruction?
