I was having a discussion with someone concerning the words “husband of one wife” in 1 Tim. 3:2.

“A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;”

Many people keep using the words “husband of one wife” to prove that a woman cannot be the husband of one wife. This is a very common argument.

While I believe the passage shows that only qualified men can be elder/pastors. Am I wrong to tell people that they probably should not use the words “husband of one wife”, in the manner they use it mainly because the author had a different reason for saying that?

1. The pronoun "he" is used throughout Paul's injunction concerning the eligibility for the office of Elder... likewise Deacon.
2. The word "husband" [Grk: aner] = a man (properly as an individual male):--fellow, husband, man, sir. The word "wife" [Grk: gune] = woman; specially, a wife:--wife, woman. Thus there is a clear distinction between male and female and it is the male (biological) who is a husband and a female (biological) who is a wife.
3. The phrase "the husband of one wife" in the Greek literally reads, one wife's husband. This is a prohibition against polygamy and a restatement of God's creation and the relationship between a man and a woman (cf. Gen 2:24; Matt 19:5,6; Eph. 5:31).

As to your personal comment, it is true that the main emphasis of the 1Tim 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9 passages is establishing the qualifications for those who desire to be Elders and later dealing with the office of Deacon. However, no less salient is the gender of those who are qualified to be an Elder or Deacon. The passages incontrovertibly teach that only MALES may be an Elder or Deacon. And the phrase "husband of one wife" one wife's husband is undeniably consistent with that restriction that only males may (have permission, warrant, the right) to hold those offices. Bottom line, those who chose to bring "husband of one wife" as a polemic against egalitarians are justified in doing so and IMHO should point out that the gender of husband and wife isn't colloquial, but rather specific to man/male and woman/female which excludes the current abomination and insanity of homosexuality, homosexual marriage and gender identity.
