Which Puritans (and their books) do you recommend for a beginner in getting acquainted with Puritan writings and thoughts? Someone recommended Sibbes; however, when I googled him he remained as an Anglican and was considered a moderate.

Here are a few that I have found most beneficial and easy to read. Most in the list I have put on The Highway in the "Notable Sermons" section. So, you can easily read some of their writings and get somewhat acquainted with them and make a decision where you would like to start. For those who ask, Why bother with the Puritans?, read this: Why Read the Puritans Today?1. Robert Murray M'Cheney 2. John Flavel 3. John Willison 4. Thomas Brooks 5. Thomas Boston 6. Jeremiah Burroughs 7. Samuel Davies

Hope this does not sound like a silly question.
Shouldn’t John Owen be in that group?

Tom Owen is most definitely one of the Puritans worth reading. HOWEVER, I rarely recommend him for those starting out. He is not only prolific but deep and thus difficult for many to read. Having said that, there is one book Owen wrote which most can read and enjoy with great benefit which I have on the website here: The Glory of Christ.
