I wrote my Florida State Senator the following on the 6-week ban on abortion bill. Comments?

This 6-week abortion bill seeks to cram a theological viewpoint down the throats of other Christians, who have historically and biblically viewed the beginning of personhood, a human being, to be at "ensoulment". It is based on the the doctrine of the creation of the soul. The Bible does not define when personhood begins by the appearance of a heartbeat, but when the soul is formed in the body of the fetus. Here are statements of two Christian scholars of the past -

Adam Clarke, Methodist, commenting on Exodus 21:22ff -

"But if mischief followed, that is, if the child had been fully formed, and was killed by this means, or the woman lost her life in consequence, then the punishment was as in other cases of murder-the person was put to death; Ex 21:23."

John Trapp, 17th century Puritan, on Exodus 21:22ff -
"There is a time, then, when the embryo is not alive; therefore the soul is not begotten, but infused after a time by God. Infundendo creatur, et creando infnnditur, saith Augustine, who at first doubted, till overcome by Jerome’s arguments."

The Greek Old Testament used by Jesus and the Apostles reads on this Exodus passage as follows -

"And if two men strive and smite a woman with child, and her child be born imperfectly formed, he shall be forced to pay a penalty: as the woman's husband may lay upon him, he shall pay with a valuation. But if it be perfectly formed, he shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe." (Exod 21:22-25)

To pass this extremist, right-wing legislation into law would be an infringement of other people's equally held biblical view of what should be passed into "SECULAR law" to bind all men of any or no religion! All Christians view children as a gift of God and to be preserved from conception onward, but as to what should be binding on others in civil law, this 6-week bill is going to cost the Republicans if this is passed! It favors traducianism over creationism in theology, which is contrary to the First Amendment of the US Constitution. Our founding fathers considered the fetus gaining legal status and protection at viability, not conception:

"Founding father James Wilson, a signatory of the Declaration of Independence and original U.S. Supreme Court justice, taught his law students that,

'With consistency, beautiful and undeviating, human life, from its commencement to its close, is protected by the common law. In the contemplation of law, life begins when the infant is first able to stir in the womb. By the law, life is protected not only from immediate destruction, but from every degree of actual violence, and, in some cases, from every degree of danger.'”
