Luke,

Here are just a few of my favorite quotes from John Calvin.

Quote
The philosopher's reasoning is excellent except that God's revelation of the changed or corrupted nature is withheld from them. 1-15-8

All things are ordained by God's plan, according to a sure dispensation, for us they are fortuitous - the true causes of all events are hidden from us. 1-16-9

People should be led into the Church by the Spirit of God not by the cleverness of the flesh, these designs assume that the responsibility of the individual is salvatory, and primary in union with God. 2-3-4

We are bidden to purge ourselves of all filthiness, even though the Spirit claims for Himself alone, the office of sanctification. 2-5-12

The fact that men sin is their own doing - that they by sinning do this or that comes from the providence of God, who divides the darkness as He pleases. 2-4-4

The Word is the instrument by which the Lord dispenses the illumination of His Spirit. 1-9-3

Men indeed ought to be taught to seek God's lovingkindness, but it is only the bestowment of God's grace in the first place that leads to the seeking. 2-3-11

God's lovingkindness is freely given - to counter legalists who say He is motivated by reward or compliment. 2-3-11

To have been made in the likeness of God seemed a small matter to Adam unless he attained equality with God - a monstrous wickedness. 2-1-4

That is only a micro-taste of Calvin. The entire book of "The Institutes" is like this.
