john a, this is not the second chance theory that jw. and mormons hold to. IMO, the JW's believe this because of a literal rendering from their New World Translation. In fact, for this purpose the good news was declared also to the dead, that they might be judged as to the flesh from the standpoint of men but might live as to the spirit from the standpoint of God. NWT (Jehovah’s Witnesses) The NWT was translated by an "inspired" committee, the most scholarly qualified of which had only two years of study in Greek, and had learned Hebrew "on his own".
