What does 'ites' mean at the end of a name. I assume it denoted a group of people, but how big is the group. Could it be just a family or does it mean something almost as big as a nation

The reason asking is that in 2 Samuel 23, many of the men named as the most loyal and fiercest fighters for King David had an 'ite' in the name describing them. I also assume these men were Jews, and not foreigners. I somehow thought a name with an 'ite' meant foreigners to the Jews, but not sure now.

The "ite" is simply an annex which represents a group, whether of a nation, e.g., Israelites, Amonites, etc., tribe or family. In the case you referenced in 2Sam 23:8f, the "ite" tells you what family they belonged to. There is some disagreement as to the identity of Josheb-basshebeth who is said to belong to the family of the Tahchemonites and perhaps a son of Hachmoni??

OR, there is a remnant of Pilgrims who do even now exist as described in Scripture,

Quote
Hebrews 11:13-16 (ASV) These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things make it manifest that they are seeking after a country of their own. And if indeed they had been mindful of that [country] from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better [country], that is, a heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God; for he hath prepared for them a city.
I am confident that I have been given the grace and mercy of God and made one of those pilgrims who is seeking with an unshakable hope that 'better country, that is, a heavenly:'. grin
