I think it is worth considering the practice of the Lord Jesus here.
Whether in conversation with Satan or with the Pharisees, His constant reference was to the written word. "It is written......" "Have you not read.......?" His attitude to 'tradition' was scathing ( Mark 7:5-8. cf. Matt 5:21-22 etc).
