John, I think you knew the answer that you were looking for, you were just seeking confirmation. There are forms of discipleship that cost little or nothing in terms of money, meaning scripture memory and one on one bible study. The real question is the one you have rightly stated concerning time. Am I or is the other person willing to give of my time to help another?
Every Timothy needs a Paul and every Paul needs a Timothy and once that Timothy becomes a Paul then he needs a Timothy, 1Tim.1:18,19. I now relate a personal experience concerning a mercy ministry. I know that my heart is not always in the right place and God knows when it needs adjusting. Recently while struggling with an account that was slow to pay my company for work completed I pulled into a convenience store for a drink. There on the curb sat a homeless man right beside the only available parking space. I realized that if I parked there I would be confronted by him and I was in no mood for giving at that moment. I pulled down past the last space, parked and looked away a I passed by where he sat. Conviction started to overtake me before I entered the store but still being unwilling to give in fully I counted the money in my wallet. Two twenties and a single after paying for my drink. I folded the single and said to myself that the one was all he was getting from me. As I turned the corner to where he should have been there was not a soul to be seen. Two major roads on two sides and a fence blocking the other two sides left nowhere for him to have gone in less than a minute. Was he an angel? All I know is that I got into my truck and was brought to tears at my own selfishness. I prayed for another chance to show the love of my heavenly father. Two days later in another city that I travel to on business God supplied that opportunity and I did not miss it.
John, my point is that it may be you or I that God is speaking to in that moment of ministry.
