Hi Ruth,

I know that you addressed this to Joe, but I will respond. When I look at the prayers in the Bible, I see the Holy Character and attributes of God proclaimed throughout, but nearly always in the beginning. For myself, when I think of preparation for prayer, I think of Isaiah's experience in the temple; he first encountered the seraphim crying, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Hosts! The whole world is full of His glory!" His response was to be undone in the presence of the Lord, and was only then able to hear and respond.

What are our petitions but laundry lists if we do not first acknowledge God's Holiness and in comparison our worthless, sinful state before Him? How else can we praise Him for the mercy and grace He has bestowed upon us? How else can we pray boldly before Him unless we first acknowledge that He has ordained those prayers that are in keeping with His will? O, how I long to be in that final state in glory when my prayers are totally un-self-conscious and made perfect before His presence! There is so much of "me" that remains.

Trust the past to God's mercy, the present to God's love and the future to God's providence." - St. Augustine
