Colson would certainly say it is our job to if not "shore up" Western civilization, to at least reform or transform it as part of the cultural mandate.

point taken. However, your position doesn't leave the door open very far for cultural reform. Not that cultural reform is our top priority (as you said, proclaiming Christ is preeminent).
I don't know if you find it a worthy cause to take part in political causes, but if you do then you must have to participate solo through a private letter writing campaign. For you to show up at a rally would violate your conscience because there are non-reformed religious folk there.?
(If I'm less than coherent it's because I'm still asleep).

I'm beginning to think that it would be better if the Church as a whole quit meddling the in affairs of the State and just focused on preaching the Gospel. That would positively affect our culture in ways that we can't even begin to imagine.

However, don't we as citizens have a responsibility toward the state?

I am probably splitting a hair here. As Citizens of America, yes we have many civic duties. Our Christianity should affect the way we carry those duties out. Some folks who call themselves Christians are so wrapped up in thier Social agenda that they have forgotten that the best way to change the Country is to see all its Citizens saved. By all means go to jury duty and vote and pay your taxes--dutifully as you know is right. But realize that there are very good reasons for the Separation of Church and state provisions in the Constitution.
