Studying Revelation this month in Sunday School. We had an interesting discussion about Hell so I went looking for some more info. Macarthur's commentary says: Permission to Quote: All Scripture quotations, unless otherwise indicated, are taken from the New American Standard Bible(r), (c) Copyright The Lockman Foundation 1960, 1962, 1963, 1968, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1994. Used by permission. Scripture quotations marked NKJV are taken from the New King James Version. Copyright (c) 1982 by Thomas Nelson, Inc. Used by permission. All rights reserved.
The evidence is irrefutable, the verdict rendered; judgment will be swiftly carried out. As the sentence is passed, death and Hades (the grave, and the temporary place of punishment for everyone whose name was not found written in the book of life) were thrown into the lake of fire, meaning that they will go out of existence, swallowed up by the final hell. Their inmates, currently suffering in their spirits only, will be united with specially designed resurrection bodies and cast into eternal hell (cf. Matt. 10:28). That final hell, described as the lake of fire, may already exist (cf. Matt. 25:41), but if so, it is currently unoccupied. Its first two occupants, the beast and the false prophet, will not arrive until the end of the Tribulation (19:20). The bold part is what I'm thinking about. Is this something like purgatory or what? (Now I'm not going RC on you, just curious) (BTW, missed you guys but had some computer hardware issues and just couldn't get it back online. Thanks!--D)

A preacher who used a Bible that God has blessed for over four hunderd years once said "Hades, Gehenna, Sheol it's all Hell to me" And he didn't need permission to quote from it. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Blame it on Quickverse. I forgot that it adds that little disclaimer and I was in a hurry.
Oh well. It was a good lesson anyway.

This was originally the valley of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem, where the filth and dead animals of the city were cast out and burned; a fit symbol of the wicked and their future destruction. Hope that helps.

If you believe what you like in the gospels, and reject what you don't like, it is not the gospel you believe, but yourself. Augustine of Hippo
