Hey guys, I just wanted to ask for some ideas, last Sunday I suggested to my sunday school class (with permission from our Youth Minister / Teacher) that we should decorate our room because it is rather plain and bland.

The Description:
It's a basement room (barely big enough for 2 small tables and chairs around them) and it has 4 off white (kind of tan or beige) walls and currently only 1 wall has any decoration. We have a chalk board to the right just inside the door and then a tack board next to that with a (green and white) world map on it and a brown table type object under that, and then the light brown tables and the folding metal chairs situated in the center of the room seating 8 to 10 people.

We've taken to using the chalk board and I've written some quotes there and our youth minister has placed some quotes on the tack board, but I want to do something with the other three walls (but we can't paint and we're college students so we can't spend a lot of money). Thus far I've suggested that we hang inspirational and helpful explanitory quotes we find or if maybe we find some cool pictures we can print them off and hang them. I really think decorating the room is a good idea so if anyone has any experience or ideas of what we could do to liven up the room or if anyone has any good quotes I can put up on the walls, I'd love to get them.

Oh, speaking of quotes, while recentely reading online I came across a someone paraphrasing Martin Luther saying something about people not even sinning well and I was curious if anyone could shed some light on what comment of Luther's this person may have been refering to, if any.

Thanks,

Bro. Luke

Luke,

I can't recall the exact quote you are referring to which you attribute to Luther, but here are a few of my favorite quotes:

Quote
Love
"And at the end of the world, when the church of Christ shall be settled in its last, and most complete, and its eternal state, and all common gifts, such as convictions and illuminations, and all miraculous gifts, shall be eternally at an end, yet then divine love shall not fail, but shall be brought to its most glorious perfection in every individual member of the ransomed church above. Then, in every heart, that love which now seems as but a spark, shall be kindled to a bright and glowing flame, and every ransomed soul shall be as it were in a blaze of divine and holy love, and shall remain and grow in this glorious perfection and blessedness through all eternity! " ~~Jonathan Edwards, Charity and Its Fruits

Quote
"Then I must ask one more question: if all that were needed was to make a man willing, do you not at once degrade the Holy Spirit? Are we not in the habit of giving all the glory of salvation wrought in us to God the Spirit? But now, if all that God the Spirit does for me is make me willing to do these things for myself, am I not in a great measure a sharer with the Holy Spirit in the glory? and may I not boldly stand up and say, 'It is true the Spirit gave me the will to do it, but still I did it myself, and therein I will glory; for I did these things myself without assistance from on high, I will not cast my crown at his feet; it is my crown, I earned it, and I will keep it.'" - C.H. Spurgeon

Quote
"If you find yourself loving any pleasure better than your prayers, any book better than the Bible, any house better than the house of God, any table better than the Lord's table, any person better than Christ, any indulgence better than the hope of heaven - take alarm!" - Thomas Guthrie

Quote
"All men become like the objects of their worship. Our inward character is being silently moulded by our view of God and our conception of him. Christian character is the fruit of Christian worship; pagan character the fruit of pagan religion; semi-Christian character the fruit of a half-true understanding of God. The principle holds good for us all: we become like what we worship for worse or for better. 'They that make them are like unto them' (Psa. 115:8)." — Maurice Roberts

And my favorite of favorites is this one:

Quote
"Should the Lord Jesus appear now to any of us in His majesty and glory, it would not be to our edification nor consolation. For we are not meet nor able, by the power of any light or grace that we have received, or can receive, to bear the immediate appearance and representation of them. His beloved apostle John had leaned on His bosom probably many a time in his life, in the intimate familiarities of love; but when He afterward appeared to him in His glory, "he fell at his feet as dead" (Rev. 1:17). And when He appeared to Paul, all the account he could give thereof was "that he saw a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun"; where-upon he and all that were with him 'fell to the ground' (Acts 26:13,14)." — John Owen The Glory of Christ p. 174

In His grace,

My thanks Pilgrim, Spurgeon and Owen are favorites of our group (though I've not posted either of these yet).

Sorry Luke,

But I would have expected you would have gotten a lot of response to your request for quotes. Perhaps they will yet show up? [Linked Image]

I like this one from Matthew Henry:

"Thanksgiving is good, but thanksliving is better."

Taken from his commentary on Isaiah 38

Here's a link I found of Spurgeon quotes, but I can't vouch for their accuracy.

Luke,

Here are just a few of my favorite quotes from John Calvin.

Quote
The philosopher's reasoning is excellent except that God's revelation of the changed or corrupted nature is withheld from them. 1-15-8

All things are ordained by God's plan, according to a sure dispensation, for us they are fortuitous - the true causes of all events are hidden from us. 1-16-9

People should be led into the Church by the Spirit of God not by the cleverness of the flesh, these designs assume that the responsibility of the individual is salvatory, and primary in union with God. 2-3-4

We are bidden to purge ourselves of all filthiness, even though the Spirit claims for Himself alone, the office of sanctification. 2-5-12

The fact that men sin is their own doing - that they by sinning do this or that comes from the providence of God, who divides the darkness as He pleases. 2-4-4

The Word is the instrument by which the Lord dispenses the illumination of His Spirit. 1-9-3

Men indeed ought to be taught to seek God's lovingkindness, but it is only the bestowment of God's grace in the first place that leads to the seeking. 2-3-11

God's lovingkindness is freely given - to counter legalists who say He is motivated by reward or compliment. 2-3-11

To have been made in the likeness of God seemed a small matter to Adam unless he attained equality with God - a monstrous wickedness. 2-1-4

That is only a micro-taste of Calvin. The entire book of "The Institutes" is like this.

Here are some more good quotes I found online.
http://www.puritansermons.com/index.htm

"The reason [for the spread of Arminian] doctrine is because some preachers are men of learning and moral men, and they have drunk in some errors and lack experience. Learning and morality will qualify men to make many good and profitable sermons, much for the edification of the hearers. Learning qualifies men to clear up many principles of religion, and a moral disposition may fit men zealously to reprove vicious practices. But men may be learned men, yet drink in very corrupt doctrines."
SOLOMON STODDARD

"True union makes a true Christian: many close with Christ, but it is upon their own terms; they take and own him, but not as God offers him. The terms upon which God in the gospel offers Christ, are, that we shall accept of a broken Christ with a broken heart, and yet a whole Christ with the whole heart. A broken Christ with a broken heart, as a witness of our humility; a whole Christ with a whole heart, as a witness of our sincerity. A broken Christ respects his suffering for sin; a broken heart respects our sense of sin; a whole Christ includes all his offices; a whole heart includes all our faculties. Christ as King, Priest, and Prophet, and as a Mediator. Without any one of these offices, the work of salvation could not have been completed."
MATTHEW MEAD

"I am tempted to think that I am now an established Christian,--that I have overcome this or that lust so long,--that I have got into the habit of the opposite grace,--so that there is no fear; I may venture very near the temptation--nearer than other men. This is a lie of Satan. One might as well speak of gunpowder getting by habit of resisting fire, so as not to catch spark. As long as powder is wet, it resists the spark; but when it becomes dry, it is ready to explode at the first touch. As long as the Spirit dwells in my heart, He deadens me to sin, so that, if lawfully called through temptation, I may reckon upon God carrying me through. But when the Spirit leaves me, I am like dry gunpowder. Oh for a sense of this!"
ROBERT M M'CHEYNE

"They cannot serve two masters God and the world. You know men will condemn you, if you be true to God: if, therefore, you must needs have the favour of men, you must take it alone without God's favour. A man-pleaser cannot be true to God, because he is a servant to the enemies of his service; the wind of a man's mouth will drive him about as the chaff, from any duty, and to any sin. How servile a person is a man-pleaser! How many masters hath he, and how mean ones! It perverteth the course of your hearts and lives, and turneth all from God to this unprofitable way."

Here are some good quotes I found online, I have backed all my books for them to go back home.
http://www.gospelweb.net/puritanquotes1.htm
"Question: How shall we know that we love the reproofs of the Word? (1) When we desire to sit under a heart-searching ministry. Who cares for medicines that will not work? A godly man does not choose to sit under a ministry that will not work upon his conscience. (2) When we pray that the Word may meet with our sins. If there is any traitorous lust in our heart, we would have it found out and executed. We do not want sin covered, but cured. We can open our breast to the bullet of the Word and say, 'Lord, smite this sin.'" THOMAS WATSON

"Satan promises the best, but pays with the worst; he promises honour, and pays with disgrace; he promises pleasure, and pays with pain; he promises profit, and pays with loss; he promises life, and pays with death. But God pays as he promises; all his payments are made in pure gold." THOMAS BROOKS

"One great contest, between the religion of Arminianism, and the religion of Christ, is, who shall stand entitled to the praise and glory of a sinner's salvation? Conversion decides this point at once; for I think that, without any imputation of uncharitableness, I may venture to say, that every truly awakened person, at least when he is under the shine of God's countenance upon his soul, will fall down upon his knees, with this hymn of praise ascending from his heart, Not unto me, O Lord, not unto me, but to thy name, give the glory: I am saved not for my righteousness, but for thy mercy and thy truth's sake."
AUGUSTUS TOPLADY

"You all have by you a large treasure of divine knowledge, in that you have the Bible in your hands; therefore be not contented in possessing but little of this treasure. God hath spoken much to you in the Scripture; labor to understand as much of what he saith as you can. God hath made you all reasonable creatures; therefore let not the noble faculty of reason or understanding lie neglected. Content not yourselves with having so much knowledge as is thrown in your way, and as you receive in some sense unavoidably by the frequent inculcation of divine truth in the preaching of the word, of which you are obliged to be hearers, or as you accidentally gain in conversation; but let it be very much your business to search for it, and that with the same diligence and labor with which men are wont to dig in mines of silver and gold."
