Matthew 10:18-20 (NASB)

18and you will even be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.

19"(A)But when they hand you over, (B)do not worry about how or what you are to say; for it will be given you in that hour what you are to say.

20"For (C)it is not you who speak, but it is the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

I was at work the other night and I heard a co-worker of mine describe a Christian singer as being "anointed." This got me to thinking and I was trying to figure out how this was similar or connected to the cessation of Gods special revelation.

While I firmly believe that God does not "talk" to us today and that he has fully revealed Himself through the Bible. I am unsure exactly how this affects the work of His Spirit in us now.

I've heard people express their belief that a preacher was "anointed" during a sermon. Meaning that at some point during the sermon, the Holy Spirit kind of "took over" or "took control" and the delivery and message of the Preacher was smoother, and not exactly what he originally intended to say. This isn't to say that God via the Holy Spirit is giving out divine revelation, I see this as more of just the Holy Spirit aiding us in our work. In singing, preaching, teaching, whatever.

So I was wondering if anyone would like to comment and help me better understand this concept. Thanks.

Y.B.I.C,

Dave.

Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. - Galatians 2:16

God does communicate to us today in answered/unanswered prayer and His generous acts of providence, however as you clearly stated he does not verbally speak to us.

Some Charismatic’s and others believe that the Holy Spirit comes upon them in a special manner to preach, sing, slay people in the Spirit, to heal, and all the other gifts, et. al. (not to mention anointing oils, cloths, letters, and such). You might say they consider it the unction of their function. Catholics do something related called, “Extreme Unction.” Benny Hinn claims a “fire anointing” (if you desire a sad laugh listen to these audio clips here). This is their so-called motivation and you will hear it called things like, “I was being led by the Spirit to …” or, “I felt ….”. Some when they disobey God claim they were not “under the anointing” and thus could not obey … in other words another excuse for disobedience.

As you can see I have have the disco anointing. [Linked Image]

Dave,

I fully agree with J.E.'s analysis. I have also heard the term applied to speakers and musicians. But what it generally means is that the speaker is able to rile the masses into a fever pitch, bring them to tears (or to the altar) and somehow this is supposed to show that he is "anointed." It's just fleshly and and don't see how it glorifies Jesus Christ.
