Are we meant to be 'the mirror of a lost world' or the 'mirror to a lost world' ... ?
A few months ago, I had the opportunity to experience first hand what this new generation regards as music. As I placed the Ipod headphones on; what I was confronted with was a cancophony of sound that I can only describe as what it might be like to be in the Lake of Fire. Hate poured out of those tiny speakers and spanked me so hard, I was in shock. Fortunately, I had brought along with me a 1G stick with some music by Resurrection Band. (I reckoned that even though it was not as loud and out-of-date, it had a message of hope.)
Soft, gentle, hypnotic sounds are no less dangerous than LOUD BASHING SCREAMING SOUNDS, both achieve a similar end, they create a state of mind I have called, 'embalming fluid, in preparation for the Lake of Fire.'
I believe that the safest music is the sort that Jesus was indicating to; when He spoke to the woman at the well of Summaria.
The current trend is towards mantra, towards contemplative, towards trance, towards guru, shaman, devotee - in lifestyle and music. It is dangerous and will crush as viciously as does that NOISE which I heard from that Ipod.
What is the remedy? I believe it is contained in the words of Jesus to the woman at the well of Summaria. We need to worship and live as Jesus taught us to pray, with sincerity, without repetition, with hearts and minds that are filled with the 'word of Christ', and hearts and minds that are filled with 'the Spirit of God'. We need to be light, we need to be salt; a 'light mirror of truth and spirit' to a world that is shrinking into despair, emptiness, the void, ....... the Lake of Fire.
So what's it to be ... ? Mirror of, or mirror to a lost world ?

You know straw Pilgrim and others have posted many things regarding contemporary music and so called CCM. Now I may not agree with him regarding everything he's said (Got to listen to my Dave Brubbeck Take Five every now and then) the most important thing you can take from his statements is that nothing is made in a vacuum: Music is not neutral its creators will have certain agendas. You must take that into consideration.

Boanerges,
You're showing your age. I've also got a copy that I much appreciated of Brubbeck's Take Five. Only it's stored in a closet somewhere on vinyl.

Much to the chagrin of Mr. Boanerges, I do have some appreciation for Dave Brubeck's "Take Five", written in 5/4 time. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.the-highway.com/Smileys/razz.gif) Unfortunately, I do not have a physical copy of it as you do. And so, I have to resort to my failing memory which at this point does remember having sat but 10 feet away from Mr. Brubeck while his group played this unusual (at the time) tune. The occasion was a small gathering at the college I was attending back in 1965. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.the-highway.com/Smileys/old.gif)

Romans 3:22-24 Well Denny I'm afraid that I am a bit of a technophile when it comes to such things. I've of course heard all the arguments of vinyl vs cd (not to mention certain guitar players who prefer tubes vs solid state) so I tend to look for those classics of good jazz in the latest format. But I will be half a century this year DV.

Hi Boanerges,
I am looking forward to finally be in the 50 Club. There seems to be another club here, the Take5 club. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/Eeeeeek.gif" alt="" /> I have a fairly good collection of Jazz instrumental, right across the board; from strict score to free form players. My real passion is the blues players and singers. I have had one favourite for a few years now and it is that timeless duo of 'Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee' on an album called 'Blowin' the Fuses' - I think they have Lightning Hopkins sitting in. When the blues, as with all music styles is in the 'House of the Lord' as so to speak, it is by far the most gratifying.
It is no doubt that there is another dimension to music other than what is audible. Music has penetration to the spirit and therefore has dynamic effect on personality. (I noticed at the physio Dr's spot, she had a degree in Musical Healing or something like that. She had orchestral/classical stuff playing in her rooms.
Slightly off the topic. I am currently listening to a lecture titled 'The Artist Needs No Justification' by Dr Rookmaker, who wrote 'Modern Art and the Death of a Culture' (way back) and I have worked through and impressive set of sixteen lectures by Ray Huges of Selah Ministries. (A most interesting and inspiring man.) He taught himself to read music as he was given the task of conducting a 28 piece orchestra, which swelled to; I think 3 000 people in total...His thoughts about the musicians in King David's orchestra and their qualifications was of great fascination. (He himself admitting to being saved at an Iron Butterfly Concert while listening to 'Ingaddadavida')
The writers (lyricists) have always fascinated me. Have any of you Jazzy babies listened to the latest Bob Dylan, 'Modern Times' it is surpisingly mellow and very jazzy. I mean it, plus his lyrics are worth a twist and a tickle. Dylan was hailed as a prophet, and so was Paul Simon, what messages are they putting out these days? In your opinion who are the real messengers to this generation...? (which artist and musicians ?)
If music is the expression of the inner-most being, what if there is nothing inside ? Is the empty-barrel syndrome the cause of all the NOISE ? Is a pretty melody, a sweet tune, a catch chorus line a mirror to a lost world ? Is musical excellence, or entertainment - keeping the customers satisfied being a mirror to, or a mirror of a lost world - meaningless, puffed up and pretty, but hollow ?
His,
