As many are aware Arminian theologians present Ephesians 1:4 “Accordingly as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.” believe that the predestination in this verse is centered on the act of choice before the foundations of the world, rather than on individuals themselves. What would you say to say to refute this interpretation of the verse in question?
In the article I linked he presents the full context of why he believes this is the proper interpretation of the verse and others of the same topic.

I believe that in the verses following Eph 1:4 we read more on individuals, rather than on their lifestyles. So I think that his interpretation is highly unlikely. So it would seem that the mention of the acts (holy and without blame) in Eph.1:4 of individuals would be more of an identification mark of the elect rather than actually what or who is chosen.

What are your thoughts?

Yes I know that I have made a few threads on this particular topic in the last little while, but I have my reasons. Mainly I want to be sure I understand the issues before I reply to the person I am talking to on the matter.

We can start with the fact that it is an inept interpretation of the English to read it this way, nevermind the Greek. "He hath chosen US in Him." "Us" is the object of "He hath chosen." "Us" refers to people, not a plan or a "lifestyle." The idea is that the purpose of His choice of us is for us to be holy and blameless.

Eph. 1:4 "who has blessed us"
Eph. 1:5 "he predestined us"
Eph. 1:6 "he has blessed us"
Eph. 1:7 "we have..."
"...redemption through his blood"
"...the forgiveness of our sins"
Eph. 1:8 "he lavished upon us"
Eph. 1:9 "making known to us"
Eph. 1:11 "we have obtained an inheritance"

Tom I think you worded this wrong. Oh I see they mean the creatures choice not God's.

The true doctrine concerning Election and Reprobation having been explained, the Synod rejects the errors of those:

This is repugnant to the entire Scripture, which constantly inculcates this and similar declarations: Election is not out of works, but of him that calleth. Romans 9:11. "As many as were ordained to eternal life believed," Acts 13:48 <span style="background-color:#FFFF00">"He chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy," Ephesians 1:4. </span> "Ye did not choose me, but I chose you," John 15:16."But if it be of grace, it is no more of works," Romans 11:6 "Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son," 1 John 4:10.

Maybe I was raised an arminian, as fundamental baptist we never have this kind of discussion. Is it to maintain unity of the church, at the expense of truth? Though its easily recognized by a common reader what the verse mean, why do men muddle it as to make it unfit to drink. What a precious hope and promise and though am not a learned theologian would rejoice in every letter of it.
