Luk 2:25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. Luk 2:26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. Luk 2:27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, Luk 2:28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Luk 2:29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: Luk 2:30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Luk 2:31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; Luk 2:32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. Luk 2:33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.
What thinketh the group?
Was this event: 1- An answer to Simeon's prayer 2- To set apart Jesus from other children that were being brought for circumcision 3- To show honor to Jesus in recognization of who he is 4- Something else

Sojourner, Certainly it is an answer to Simeon's desire & a fulfillment of the Spirit's promise to Simeon that he would not die until he had seen the Christ. I don't think the purpose was to set Jesus apart from the other first-born sons brought to the Temple for dedication, per se, but it certainly has that effect to some degree. (I can't imagine Simeon pronounced this doxology over any other child! ) Beyond that, yes, certainly it was intended to glorify Christ, & to confirm the prophecy of His role not only as savior of the Jews but as savior of the elect from every nation.
Kyle
I tell you, this man went down to his house justified.

Sojourner, Today I heard RC Sproul preach about Simeon on the car radio. You can hear it HERE at Ligonier Ministries titled "The Infancy". Sproul speaks about Simeon about 11 or 12 minutes into his teaching. William,
