I would like to carry around with me a good Commentary on the whole Bible.
A complete commentary in one book.
I realize that Hendrickson's and Kistemaker's commentary is excellent on the New Testament, but it is of course multi volume and only the NT.
So I was thinking either Matthew Henry's or Albert Barnes? I like both of these commentators very much.
What do you all think?
Dave
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. - Galatians 2:16

Hmmm... That's a difficult question to answer since there are few, if any single-volume commentaries on the entire Bible which are 'solid'. 1. Matthew Henry is fairly good, but my criticism of him is his 'spiritualizing' of texts which can lead to poor or outright wrong application. He is almost 'iconic' in some circles and well spoken of by most everyone. 2. Albert Barnes was pastor of Tenth Presbyerian Church in Philadelphia, PA. His theology was not truly "Reformed". Some of what he wrote is good and some of it is questionable and some is outright wrong. You have to read Barnes with attentive discernment. Okay, if pressed and I had to choose between Matthew Henry and Albert Barnes, I think Henry would probably be my reluctant choice. To be honest, I rarely consult either even though they are part of my library.
