Since this this the open forum I figure this won't be a big deal to ask, though I thought about simply asking this as the same forum as all the jokes but I don't know how this will be received.
Anyway,
A reformed friend and I were talking and I don't know how exactly this question came about but just jokingly it was asked which would be worse, dating an "unregenerate pagan" or dating "a papist". Anyway, I thought I'd ask and see what you guys have to say.

Disclaimer: I don't have any plans to date anyone right now (though I'm 19 and quite willing to date), I'm only asking this out of amusement of the question and curiosity about the answers I might receive, do not take this post too seriously.

-Brother Luke
Both are sin in God's eyes. We are not to be unequally yoked. I've had people say that they know of "born again Catholics," but why would a truly born again believer stay in the Catholic Church?

By the way, happy Reformation Sunday everyone!
True godliness is a sincere feeling which loves God as Father as much as it fears and reverences Him as Lord, embraces His righteousness, and dreads offending Him worse than death~ Calvin
Although I'd consider them roughly on the same plane, I think it would be worse to date a papist, if only because the distinction between paganism and Christianity is blurred.

I tell you, this man went down to his house justified.
The question then becomes, "who is born again, for real?" How about a paedobaptist presbyterian dating a credobaptist Puritan? There would be some definite differences, and some wrong. How would we resolve these issues?

God bless,

william
Well, I think it gets to the issue of the essentials. Of course, someone might claim that credobaptists are heretics or paedobaptists are lost. Our Sunday School lesson was on 1 John today, so that could be a good starting point om figuring out essentials.

Not to throw cold water on the subject, but I've been married for 7 years, love my wife and we have 2 kids and our relationship is growing daily in Christ, . . . but . . ., I "dated" my wife for 7 years before we got married, and wished that I never would have "dated" her. I don't know how much this topic has been discussed here, and lazily I didn't do a search for any discussions on this topic.

I know this isn't the question you're asking but I'm writing this in the hopes of saving you the pains that I had. Wiser minds than mine can speak on this subject a lot better I'm sure, and to the extent that I want to raise my children to have a biblical view of "dating," I'd appreciate hearing from those wiser minds. Thanks much.
Since your question is theoretical, my response is understanding that you are merely throwing out a "what if" question.

I would say that dating a pagan would be worse. I find that Papists deficiencies are their lack of knowledge of the Bible. They claim to love Jesus, but they don't understand who Jesus is, and they especially don't understand His one-time sacrifice for the sins of man. We have a huge mission field in the world of the Roman Catholics, but folks like JI Packer don't think we SHOULD evangelize since they are brothers anyway! (ooops, off topic, sorry). Back on topic, most Romanists have never heard the true gospel. I was born and raised a Romanist, and I did not hear the true gospel until I was in my late 20's...and I stumbled across it (we all know that the Holy Spirit caused me to pick up that book at the Tampa airport when I was on that 10 hour layover). But they do hear Scripture every time they enter into a church....more Scripture, in fact, than most Protestants hear! Also, the liturgy itself is based upon Scripture....at least the words are (not the practices themselves, mind you!).

A pagan hates Jesus, the Biblical Jesus, the Papist Jesus, the secular Jesus. The pagan would be worse, much worse. This does not mean that the pagan has no hope, because he does. In fact, to muddy the waters further, many Romanists are simply pagan.

Steve Cross
