Hi Pilgrim, The issue of our teacher's rejection of Nicene creed and eternal generation arose subsequent to an assertion he made that the 2nd person of the Trinity possessed a human nature prior to the incarnation. My husband's objection led to the disclosure of his position on the aforementioned creed and doctrine. The following (which is pasted below) is his response to my husband's request that he support his assertion from Scripture. Would you mind briefly commenting on these verses and his "reasoning according to Scripture."? Hebrews 1:1-3 (KJV) 1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
In these verses, God defines that He is speaking of the Lord Jesus Christ, the God Man. The Triune God is a Spirit and has no image. Only Jesus Christ is the express image of God’s Person. Among the glories that God declares of the Lord Jesus is that it was through Him (the God Man Jesus Christ) that God made the worlds. He had to have taken on humanity prior to the creation of the worlds, according to these verses.
Colossians 1:14-17 (KJV) 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
God makes it clear in verse 14 that He is speaking of the Lord Jesus Christ. He goes on to tell us two things about His humanity. The Lord Jesus Christ is the Firstborn of all creation. Therefore, His human soul was the first thing that God created according to this verse. In addition, He tells us again, as in Hebrews 1, that it was the God Man Jesus Christ who was the creator of all things. Again in verse 17, He emphasizes both points again, that the God Man Jesus Christ was before all things and that He created all things.
John 6:62 (KJV) What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? This verses proves that that the Lord had already taken a human soul prior to the incarnation. He declares that the Son of Man was in heaven prior to the incarnation. Revelation 3:14 (KJV) 14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
Once again, God reveals that the creation of the soul of Jesus Christ was the first created Person or thing.
John 8:56-58 (KJV) 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. 57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? 58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
Christ declared that He, Jesus Christ the God Man, existed before Abraham. He cannot be speaking of the Second Person apart from His humanity because Abraham’s faith and rejoicing were in the Person of Christ.
John 17:24 (KJV) 24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
He declares that the Father loved Him, the Lord Jesus Christ, before the foundation of the world. He had to existed for the Father to have loved Him. As I have mentioned previous, the eternal covenant demands the presence of the God Man as Mediator. He had to have already assumed a Human Nature at that point in order to be Head of the men that He covenanted to save. Only Jesus Christ as the God Man could have made that covenant. The Father and the Spirit could not because they are not the Head over Christ’s new man, the church. And neither the Father nor the Spirit could be Mediator because neither are human.
I will stop here with the Scripture quotes. I could give you many pages of Scripture verses that prove the same thing. But each of these verses is conclusive. In each one, the Scriptures declare that the God Man existed before the incarnation. Some conclusively date His assumption of humanity as before the foundation of the world, while others merely declare that He had assumed humanity prior to the incarnation.
