Before the Reformation it was fashionable for clergy to assume that there were various ‘levels’ of meaning (usually four) to be mined out of every passage of Scripture. Mystical and fanciful allegorical methods of interpretation were well entrenched. Even Augustine, who taught that the literal sense of the Scripture should be seen as paramount, accepted the idea that a passage will have several levels of sense... This month's article from the pen of the well-known author and pastor, Peter Masters of the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London, is about biblical hermeneutics; the science of biblical interpretation. It is not a technical manual to be sure, but rather a short article put in simple terms which seeks not only to show how Scripture is to be rightly handled, but also a warning against those who would twist the Scriptures to their own destruction. Enjoy! You can access this article here: What the Reformers Really Said: Calvin on Types and Parallels. For later reading, you can find this article in the Article of the Month archive.
