I've started to post J.C. Ryles commentary on Matthew on my blog and It just occured to me that I have no idea what English translation it is.

I get it from Gracegems.org and I assume that it is the same version found in the published book by Banner of Truth.

The Gospel of MATTHEW by by J. C. Ryle, 1856.

Now I know that the only English translation Ryle had to work with at the time of the writing was the KJV. The Revised Version of the KJV wasn't created until 1881. But I don't know if this commentary has been changed and an updated English version used.

Well I've tried to match the versus to the KJV,ERV,ASV,NASB,NKJV,ESV,NIV,RSV and a couple more and none of these match.

So I'm thinking that this has got to be Ryle's own translation from the original Greek, but I would like to hear your opinions, because it's very good. If it is off of an English translation, I want to know which one. Any help would be most appriciated, thanks.

Y.B.I.C,

Dave.

Dave,

I'm not sure if this will help, but I got The Crossway Classic Commentaries. This series uses J.C. Ryle commentary on Matthew. In the Library of Congress Cataloging-in-Publication Data section at the beginning of the book, it mentions the English, Authorized 1993 as being the Bible referenced.

Maybe your bookstore has this set.

Yep,

We do have this set, I just haven't been to work yet. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try the English authorized 1993.
